Glowskin's Jillian Wright Talks Healthy, Beautiful Skin
If New York's spa scene was a music festival, then Jillian Wright's Glowskin Spa would be one of those cool bands you've never heard of, but you can't get near the stage. Glowskin has often been called "New York's best kept secret" and boasts a clientele that covers both the rich and the famous. But the reason for the success of Glowskin is Jillian Wright, the founder and head aesthetician at Glowskin Spa. Heidi sat down with Jillian and got her talking about everything from skincare to freckles. You can check out Jillian's site for her spa at: Glowskin Spa
Can you tell me how you got started? I got started in 1998. That's when I went school for aesthetics. I always had a love for the beauty industry. At the time I was living in Las Vegas and I was a part owner in a cafe inside a huge salon and spa. I always found myself gravitating towards the spa side. I then moved to NYC and wanted to start a Web site that offered funky, fresh and fabulus beauty. I did that but I also realized I had to learn more about what I was doing, so I went to school for aesthetics and became an aesthetician. Since then, it's been a wonderful journey.
What is the concept behind Glowskin spa? We combine clinical skincare with the art of pampering. We provide treatments that actually give our clients results – result-oriented skincare. We also provide massages and body treatments. I believe that the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your facial muscles are. This helps provide the best results for our treatments.
What is the best skin regimen for the person who has boundless amounts of money and for a person who is doing treatments on a budget? For someone who has all the money in the world, the first thing you want to do is to stop any further free radical damage. This can be damage from the sun, the ingesting of sugars and a whole host of other things. To stop this damage and to reverse it, I would make sure to use sunscreen everyday. I would also have a home regimen that would include the Somme Institute products (I really love their products) and a great eye gel like Environ Sequence eye gel. Every two weeks, I would schedule a microderm abrasion treatment with a alpha-hydroxyl peel. We use a lactic acid. Lactic acid molecules are larger, so they are slower to absorb and less irritating. Then, if you had sun damage or broken capillaries, I would add a photo-facial to that. It can lighten skin, even out its tone and rebuild collagen and elasticity to create a look that's nice and tight and toned. We are also offering something new called micro-current treatment which re-educates and trains the muscles in your face. That's something the stars usually use before they hit the red carpet.
What about someone on a budget? I would get a basic facial with extractions once a month or, in the least, once a season. Your skin changes seasonally so if you can go, get a good cleaning and have your aesthetician suggest a good regimen that won't break the bank. I like the Dove Essential Nutrients line. It's a really good basic line. You’re not going to get a lot of fragrance with the ingredients. I like that line a lot. If you can, throw in some massages. It's important to being stress-free..
What do you use? I use the Somme Institute line. I suffer from hormonal acne which is really, really bad around my jaw line. Now, fifteen months after I started using Somme’s products, I haven’t broken out once. The whole line has MDT-5 (molecular dispersion technology) and it’s excellent for people who have acne, sun-damaged skin, and aging skin. It's unbelievable..
How should you handle finding an aesthetician? It’s important to establish a relationship with your dermatologist or your aesthetician. Make sure you click with them. Also, make sure that they analyze your skin and listen to the information they give you. You can learn a lot from them..
One of the things you use is Manuka honey. Why were you drawn to that product and to other plant-based products? We do offer the Plantogen facial. What attracted me to the products was the manuka honey. One thing is that it's unique -- you can't get it anywhere else. Then I tried the facial for myself and found it to be so lovely and wonderful. It's not clinical, it's botanical. This allows flexibility in the product and in the facial. Plantogen is so well rounded it works on everyone.
Is there any particular advice you would give to women with freckles? Just love them! It's so funny because I have a redhead and I'm anxiously waiting to see if she is going to have freckles. Enjoy your freckles and celebrate them. And, on a more serious note, protect your skin especially when you go into the sun because the sun does a lot of damage. I love the Image and Leta sun protection lines. The most important point I can leave you with is to protect your skin.
